I have the Beach Boys song “In My Room” on repeat as I write this.
The lyrics speak of a place where you can go and tell your secrets to the air.
I hope that everyone has a sanctuary to call their own no matter how small or humble where they feel safe and content. To be able to curl up in a corner of your bed with a book and a fuzzy blanket is a gift. Being alone and savouring the calm that comes with solitude in your room is priceless.
I love to be alone and content. It grounds me. It gives me time to recharge. It gives me time to think about my day and the days to come. It allows me the time to solve problems, think of stories, plan lessons and sometimes determine what shoes I am going to wear or what color to dye my hair.
The world is a very busy and noisy place and to be able to remove yourself from the madness is sometimes necessary.
The minute I enter my room I relax. It is calm nickel grey and white, the color of clouds, and it is in the clouds and fog for a lot of the year, yet I don’t mind at all. The mournful sounds of fog horns and howls of coyotes in the fall, and the burps of frogs in the spring form a quiet and natural sound track to accompany my thoughts.
Taking time for quiet is a necessary part of my day. I can hear my thoughts and send wishes to the moon, in my room.
Do you have a sanctuary? A place that is all yours to be whatever you want to be at any moment? Let me know about your sanctuaries by sharing on the Connect page. I want to know how you quiet your mind and be the natural you.
